Flight School

Instructors

Aero Club at Van Nuys Airport is fairly unique among schools where you can learn to fly. Most schools have instructors who are "hour building", meaning they are trying to reach a certain number of hours before they are hired by airlines. One of the ways they reach this required number of hours is through instructing, which leads to their students being passed from one instructor to the next as each gets their job offer.

At Aero Club, our instructors are from all kinds of backgrounds, and all bring a wealth of experience to your lesson. Learning to fly is not a cheap hobby, and when looking at flying schools, be sure to ask if they have a high turnover of instructors, because that is an important factor to consider. It is not beneficial to your flying education to have your course and lessons interrupted as your instructor moves on to what they really want to do. At Aero Club, our instructors have all been around the school for several years, and all can provide you with names and numbers of satisfied students who are now flying.

Below is some information about some of our instructors. Some things you may be interested in knowing:

CFI: Certified Flight Instructor
CFII: Instrument Instructor
MEI: Multi-Engine Instructor
IGI: Instrument Ground Instructor

Please feel free to call them to talk about any questions you have, and perhaps arrange to meet them at the school for a full walk around. Please note that many students will have different instructors for different levels of their education, by their own choice, but it is best to stick with one instructor for each phase.

Rates start at $40/hour.

Note to instructors looking for work: With our expanding business, Aero Club is looking for quality instructors with a minimum of 500 hours. At Aero Club, instructors are independant and will keep 100% of the instruction payments from existing clients. For more information and to schedule an interview, please contact us.

Flight Training

We have been training pilots from all over the world from Private to Air Transport Pilots (ATP) for over 18 years at the same place for great rates. Pilot training courses are available according to FAR Part 61 requirements. Accelerated flight training programs, money saving packages, multi-engine and advanced pilot ratings are the Aero Club’s specialties. Please click here to view our fleet and rates.

Many schools advertise set packages, stating how much it will cost you for your various licenses. At Aero Club, we recognize that different people have different ability levels, and therefore we do not put you in a "box". We could set a price like the other schools, yet you may be a more competent pilot and would end up overpaying for your course. On the other hand, you may not feel ready to solo when these other courses require you to do so, meaning that you will end up paying for those extra hours and tests, often at a much higher rate. We just charge our hourly rate (plus instructors hourly rate) for your flying lessons. No more, no less.

This said, we will gladly put together a package for you if you would like a quote based on average hours. Please contact us.

Another factor to consider when choosing a flying school is the type of instructor you may have. At many schools, the instructors are there "time building" their hours to enter the airline industry. Your instructor could change every few weeks! At Aero Club Van Nuys, we recognize the benefit of having an uninterrupted student/instructor partnership. All of our instructors are here for the long haul!

Foreign Students

Non-US Citizen Students

Contact Richard Balint to register as a new foreign student and receive all necessary information.

Richard@AeroClubVNY.com or (888) 830-3039 ext. 102

The following steps should be followed:

  • Contact the Aero Club advising of intent to enroll in training.
  • Complete the TSA Application and fee (if applicable).
  • Submit the FAA Foreign Pilot Verification form.

All pilots receiving training in the US for the Private Pilot certificate, Instrument Rating or an initial Multi-Engine Rating who are not US Citizens are required to complete the background check by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The following is an extract from the TSA explaining the new procedure:

Due to passage of Vision 100 - Century of Aviation Reauthorization Act, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is now required to screen all non-US citizen candidates for flight training on any aircraft. To accomplish this screening, most non-US citizens seeking flight training with FAA-regulated flight training providers (whether in the US or abroad) will need to submit information via:

https://www.flightschoolcandidates.gov

The request will be submitted to the appropriate flight training providers, to verify that the applicant is truly seeking training at that facility. After this acknowledgement, the Transportation Security Administration will conduct an initial screening. If the results are favorable, the candidate may then be fingerprinted. After fingerprints are submitted, those results will be checked, and training may commence if approved by the AFSP. The law allows the Transportation Security Administration 30 days to process Category 1 applications and 5 days to process Category 2 applications after all information (including fingerprints) is received.

All information can be submitted online. A processing fee of $130 applies. Fingerprints are required as part of the process unless they have been provided previously or TSA advises otherwise. Currently, fingerprints may only be collected in the US, although TSA is working to allow collection at overseas locations. You may start your training after acknowledgement from TSA that they have received the required information. You must start your training within 180 days of the acknowledgement. Further information is available at:

http://www.tsc-csc.com/printoffices/

Exemptions

The basic philosophy is the TSA rules should not apply to those people who through their training will not acquire new pilot skills that will increase their potential level of threat. For example, completion of a Commercial Pilot certificate in a single engine airplane or if you already hold a multi engine certificate and want to do an ATP does not significantly increase your capability and therefore, is not subject to the TSA rules. See the above links for more information or please contact us.

Foreign Pilot Verification

The process for obtaining an FAA Private Pilot certificate or other certificate (eg ATP) on the basis of a foreign license requires the FAA to verify the authenticity of the foreign qualifications. This also applies to any additional ratings or upgrades to a US license issued on the basis of a foreign certificate. A letter or completed FAA form

Verification of Authenticity must be sent to the FAA in Oklahoma City, accompanied by a copies of foreign pilot and medical certificates. The FAA will then confirm that the certificates are valid and will send a letter of verification to the Flight Standards District Office selected by the applicant as well as a copy to the applicant. Please use the VNY FSDO to complete the process. Also, you may use the Aero Club as the address to mail your copy of the verification letter that may save some time. The address is:

Aero Club
(Your name)
7552 Hayvenhurst Pl
Van Nuys, CA 91406

The completed form or letter and copies of certificates and identification may be mailed or faxed as follows:

Mailing Address:

FAA
Airmen Certification Branch, AFS-760
PO Box 25082
Oklahoma City, OK 73125-0082

The request should be made at least 60 days in advance and the verification is valid for 6 months.
